Speech by Chief Minister of Penang
During Austria Reception
Fullerton Suite Annex Wing, E&O Hotel
H.E. Mr Christopher CESKA
The Ambassador of The Republic of Austria to Malaysia
Mr Berthold Jungwirth
The Honorary Consul of the Republic of Austria to Penang
Thank you for inviting me at this reception on the occasion of the appointment of Mr. Berthold Jungwirth as the new Honorary Consul of Austria to Penang. I am very happy to see the diplomatic corps of Penang growing as I consider this to be a sign of interest of the international community in my State and our aspirations of being an international and intelligent city.
Penang plays indeed a vital role in the Malaysian economy contributing 25% of Malaysia's total imports and exports. Penang can look back to a very rich historical and cultural heritage that recognises George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Now, I wasn’t aware of Penang’s historical links with old Austria and that an Austrian Emperor authorized the establishment of an Austrian Honorary Consulate here – even crowned heads had an interest in Penang back then!
I would like to congratulate Mr. Berthold Jungwirth to his new official functions in Penang especially when he has been staying in Butterworth for over 20 years. He will obviously add a touch of Central European flair to the already quite large German community here and I can only finally express the hope that our bilateral relations with Austria will then flourish even more.
