SERI MUTIARA

The official residence of His Excellency the Head of State of Penang is known as "Seri Mutiara". Situated along Jalan Utama, it was built in 1890, at a cost of $81,173.00. This building was built on the directive of Major H.E. McCullum for the British Resident Councillors serving in Penang. Seri Mutiara was then known as the Residency and its first occupant was Mr. A.M. Skinner who was the sixth Resident Councillor of Penang. The Residency served as the official residence of the highest ranking British Office in Penang until Merdeka. The first Malay Governor to occupy the residency was Y.A.M. Raja Tun Uda Raja Muhammad. The Residency was later renamed as "Seri Mutiara".
