20 November 2011
Queensbay Mall Outdoor Carpark
Just five days remains until the staging of the much-anticipated Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon, a key sporting event for Penang and one of the few marathons in the world to be held over a major and iconic bridge.
This year I am delighted to announce that the Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon will be attempting to break the Malaysian Book of Records for the Largest Bridge Run in Malaysia. The last record was also held by Penang Bridge International Marathon, with 21,399 participants in the 2007 run. This year, we have over 26,500 registered participants and are expecting yet more. Over 1,500 participants are expected from a total of 68 countries, including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and the United Kingdom.
We are extremely fortunate this year to have Allianz, the largest insurance company in the world, as our title sponsor. Allianz is also well known for supporting international sporting events, including golf and football tournaments, the Paralympics and Formula 1.
In addition, we are pleased to have as our main sponsor DIGI, Malaysia’s most popular telecommunications company, which provides a comprehensive range of affordable, convenient and easy-to-use wireless services which simplify and enrich the lives of its customers.
The official watch for the Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon is TITAN Watches, the largest watch manufacturer in India and the 5th largest in the world, which is known for producing watches that are precise, elegant and durable. Four types of special custom-made watches engraved with the Penang Marathon logo will be available on the day of the race.
This is the fourth time the marathon has been organised by the Penang State Tourism Development and Cultural Executive Committee, and each year we have witnessed many improvements through the efforts of the Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism, YB Danny Law, and his team, who have endeavoured to develop and improve on the Marathon, making it more comfortable not just for the runners but also for spectators.
With the Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon soon to be recognised as the Largest Bridge Run in Malaysia, I hope this accolade with help us further promote and develop the Penang Bridge International Marathon as one of the top marathons in the world.
