Ladies and Gentlemen

Thank you for inviting me to witness the worldwide introduction of a new patented LED light module by EcoNoon. This launching will also help to promote Penang and Malaysia as a leading LED hub.

Today’s event will witness the signing of the  licensing agreement for the manufacture and sales of the LED light devices using this patent between Econoon and Loh Ban Poh, Malaysian born and educated  inventor of high power lighting class LED package who has worked in USA for many years for a few LED chip makers.. The product will then be marketed as ecoNoon, a Malaysian product.  Mr Loh has invented and patented some of the most successful high-power lighting-class LED packages that are commercially sold today.

Malaysia was the world’s leading producer of LED package from the early 70’s to early 2000 before Thailand and China overtook it. Today’s event gives Penang based the opportunity to be the leader in LED lights capable of overtaking the best LED light device producer in the world.

I must commend EcoNoon for having the spirit of entrepreneurship well ingrained within its culture. This spirit of entrepreneurship is typical of 500,000 SMEs in Malaysia. According to the SME Development Council, SMEs contribution to GDP has risen from 29% during the period 2000-2004 to 31.4% in 2008.  In Penang alone, we now have over 26,000 SMEs mainly in the manufacturing and services sectors.

The contribution of Penang based SMEs is significant. To assist the SMEs, the Penang state government has adopted a 3 prong approach namely :

·         SMART advisory services and consultation free of charge.

·         A RM40 million SME centre over nearly 2 acres of land in Phase IV of the Bayan Lepas FIZ that provides subsidized rental to SME start-ups for a period of 2 years

·         A 100 acre SME Village in Batu Kawan for SMEs to build their factories and grow

This is the first time that a state government is launching these muscular initiatives to assist the growth of SMEs in Penang.

Lets make Penang as a centre of excellence for science and technology. With the Penang Science Council that aims to inspire innovation, Penang can lead again. Let’s work together, learn together so that we can enjoy the benefits together.

Thank you.
